Culzean Castle in Ayrshire

05/07/2022

This blog was written for us by Susanne Arbuckle of Adventures Around Scotland about her visit to Ayrshire in May 2022 when she was staying at Ayrs & Graces Bed & Breakfast (one of Scotland's Best B&Bs).

The Ayrshire coastline is littered with historic castles from the scant ruins at Turnberry, the probable birthplace of Robert the Bruce, to the more substantial remains of Dundonald Castle, home to Bruce’s grandson. However, one building stands out among them all, Culzean Castle is more country home than fortress and a tour of its rooms is an opulent introduction to the Kennedy family, one of Scotland’s oldest and most powerful clans whose ancestry can be traced back to, you guessed it, Robert the Bruce.

Culzean Castle in Ayrshire

Located a 20-minute drive south of Ayr, a trip to Culzean is not just for history lovers, the castle boasts panoramic vistas across the Firth of Clyde and is surrounded by a sprawling estate cared for by the National Trust for Scotland. From woodland walks to sheltered coves, and adventure playgrounds to wildlife encounters, there is something for all ages and all interests. You could easily spend a day here and still not see everything, so I have listed some of the highlights below to help you plan your visit.

Culzean Castle

Built for the Kennedy Earls of Cassillis, later the Marquesses of Ailsa, the original medieval tower house located here was redesigned by architect Robert Adam in the 18th century and the result is the stunning building you see today. You can take a self-guided tour of the interior which starts with an impressive introduction in the armoury where over 700 flintlock pistols adorn the walls. The tour continues through the plush library and dining room before encountering the spectacular Oval Staircase which leads to the lavish first floor rooms.

Look out for the display dedicated to President Eisenhower who stayed at the castle on four occasions and the huge kitchen where you can find out more about those who served the family.

Deer and Llamas

Everyone loves seeing red deer in Scotland but they can often be elusive, however at Culzean Country Park you are guaranteed a close-up encounter at the Deer Park. The enclosure is home to a resident herd of red deer which includes a magnificent stag along with a very cute herd of fallow deer. Another popular draw with families is the characterful herd of llamas that also lives in the enclosure, cuteness overload!

Swan Pond

The expansive manmade pond attracts a variety of wildfowl, including ducks and swans that glide around the margins and weave among the reeds. Numerous benches and picnic tables provide an ideal vantage point for wildlife watching or walk the circular pathway around the watery oasis. In 2021 a ‘sea dragon’ sculpture was placed within the pond designed to ignite the imagination of visitors young and old!

The swan pond has its own car park and is adjacent to an ice-cream parlour, adventure playpark and walking trails so it is a great destination within the park for all ages to while away an hour or two.

Walled Garden

The manicured gardens below the castle with a feature fountain are a highlight of Culzean but the concealed Walled Garden is also worth a visit. Hidden behind the gate is one of the largest walled gardens in Scotland with a mixture of flowers, fruit and vegetables. Dating back to the 18th century, exotic fruits including peaches and apricots were once grown there and the ‘Ailsa Craig’ onion was bred by a Culzean gardener in the 1870s.

Today it is a tranquil haven filled with colourful blooms and heady aromas which still provides food for the Culzean kitchens. Look out for several willow sculptures including a gardener at work among the wildflowers.

Walking Trails

There are 17 miles of pathways around Culzean Country Park with several marked coloured trails of varying lengths and difficulties. Walk among mature trees filled with bird song or head down to the beach to explore the rockpools. On your travels you can spot follies, ornate historic buildings and plenty of wildlife. As Culzean Country Park is dog friendly, your furry friend can join you on a long stroll and many of the paths are also suitable for those with buggies so the whole family can head off on an adventure.
