Craigvar, Strathpeffer

4 Star GOLD late Georgian House built in 1839 located in beautiful former spa village of Strathpeffer, in The Highlands.

Craigvar occupies a prominent position in the main square of the village of Strathpeffer. Whilst steeped in ancient history, Strathpeffer's distinctive look and architecture is the result of a Victorian interest in the apparent healing qualities of the water in the area which made it a popular spa destination and tourist resort.

This striking property has been offering accommodation to Strathpeffer's visitors almost continuously since it was built in 1839. Your hosts have completed an extensive renovation and now have a most elegant property fit for the modern age. The West Room has a 5-foot kingsize double bed and en-suite bathroom (shower and a ball and clawfoot bathtub). The self-contained suite is situated in the former Bank of Scotland building adjacent to the house and has a spacious lounge, a bedroom with a 5-foot kingsize bed and an ensuite walk-in rainfall shower, as well as a fully equipped kitchen. Bedroom facilities include USB charging points and satellite television with Sky Entertainment and Sky Sports Channels. Guests can also enjoy a welcoming decanter of sherry, fresh fruit, bathrobes and a refreshment tray. A full Scottish cooked breakfast is served in the morning.

Covid update for summer 2021: your hosts have the 'Good to Go' certificate from VisitScotland as well as the 'Safe Travels' stamp.
The East Room (twin beds, en-suite shower and dressing room) is not currently in use so that guest numbers remain limited.

The house overlooks the town square and the beautifully preserved buildings in this unique conservation village. The old Pump Room from the Spa can be visited, along with The Museum of Childhood in the old railway station. The Strathpeffer Pavilion next to Craigvar is a popular venue for concerts. Just a short walk out of the village is Castle Leod (seat of the chief of Clan Mackenzie) which is thought to be the inspiration behind Castle Leoch in 'Outlander'. The Strathpeffer Highland Games are held here in August.

Craigvar is an exceptionally good touring base from which to explore castles and distilleries of the Highlands or discover the North Coast 500. Strathpeffer is just 20 minutes from Inverness, 45 minutes from Ullapool on the West Coast and 30 minutes from Loch Ness where there are cruises throughout the year. You can also take boat trips from Inverness and the nearby Black Isle to see the Moray Firth Dolphins.
