Dating back to the 15th century, Abbotshaw House stands in a very secluded position within 363 acres of farmland and woodland with a mile stretch of private river (fishing is free for guests). Situated 21 miles from the M6 motorway and 17 miles from Kielder Water and Forest Park, this unspoilt area of the Scottish Borders is ideal for walking, cycling, fishing, golf, horse-riding and star-gazing. Abbotshaw House also offers B&B for horses with stabling, turnout, a near Olympic size all-weather arena and lovely farm/forest rides.
All bedrooms are ensuite with spectacular views of the Liddel Water valley. The Reiver Suite is ideal for a romantic weekend with its super-king size hand-carved mahogany bed and chaise-longues, while The Waverley has a king size Wallis and Gambier sleigh bed. Each bedroom has free Wifi, a 40" Freeview TV and DVD player, tea and coffee making facilities with a generous hospitality tray, hair dryer, bath robes and complimentary toiletries. Each room has a mini-fridge on the landing with complimentary bottled water. The large ensuite bathrooms have a spacious power shower, large bath, hand basin, WC and heated towel rail.
Additional accommodation is available in the Attic Suite with 2 large bedrooms (1 super-king size double and 1 twin) and a private bathroom with large bath. This can be booked for 2, 3 or 4 guests including children over 8 years old.
Guests can enjoy generous 4-course Scottish breakfasts with a varied choice that includes a full traditional, smoked salmon, kippers or pancakes. Vegetarian, vegan or gluten free available on request. Abbotshaw House is 2 miles from the thriving village of Newcastleton where evening meals are available.
An abundance of wildlife can be seen on the farm such as otters, owls, buzzards, curlews, lapwings, Canadian geese, oyster catchers, snipe, hares, squirrels and roe deer. Situated in one of the darkest places in the UK, Abbotshaw House has a telescope for guests to view the night sky here with no light pollution. The B&B is only 17 miles from Kielder Observatory.
Guests at Abbotshaw House are entitled to a 10% discount off Border Trike Tours which offer an exhilarating ride through the Scottish Borders. Nearby Whithaugh Park offers a range of outdoor activities including abseiling, archery, canoeing, climbing, zip wire, kayaking, mountain biking, an indoor swimming pool and bike hire. There are many river, forest and hill walks in the vicinity to suit walkers of all abilities. Mountain biking enthusiasts will enjoy the Newcastleton 7stanes Trail. The farm is also close to Route 10 of The Reivers Cycle Route through unspoilt countryside.
Hadrian's Wall, Carlisle, Gretna Green (with its outlet shopping centre), the North Lakes and Northumberland's famous attractions are all within easy driving distance. Historic places of interest include Liddesdale Heritage Centre and Hermitage Castle.
