South from Durness and Cape Wrath the road passes mountains with wonderful names - Cranstackie, Foinaven, Arkle, Ben Stack, and Quinag. The fishing village of Lochinver is dominated by the sugarloaf shape of Suilven which, seen sideways on, looks more like a reclining lion. The narrow winding side road follows the coast through inspiring scenery before going off to the delightful Achiltibuie with views of the Summer Isles or rejoining the main road on its way to Ullapool and Wester Ross. |
Ardvreck Castle lies on the edge of Loch Assynt with views down the loch and up on to Quinag. The castle was built about 1590 by the MacLeods of Assynt who had owned the area since the 13th century. Rumour has it that The Marquis of Montrose was captured around here in 1650, after his defeat at Carbisdale, and was held at the castle until being sent to Edinburgh for his execution. The MacKenzies seized the castle when they came to Assynt in 1672 and built Calda House, just a stones throw away in 1726. Sadly both the house and the castle were destroyed by fire. The ruins of the castle are a wonderful place to spend a lazy summer’s afternoon with a picnic and then a stroll around the area. If you are lucky you might even catch a glimpse of one of the two resident ghosts. |
