The Royal Burgh of Burntisland is a coastal resort on the Firth of Forth, and has a population
of about 6,000. It is well known to generations of day trippers, who return
time and again to enjoy the beach, the Links and the annual summer
fairground. Annual events in Burntisland include the Highland Games, the
crowning of the Summer Queen, and the Civic Week parade. There is a highly
rated 18-hole golf course, a popular bowling green, and a new leisure centre
which includes a swimming pool.
Burntisland also has many historical attractions. Among the notable
buildings is the Parish Church, which was built between 1592 and 1595 and
has recently been beautifully restored. The local Heritage Trust holds
annual exhibitions and guided walks which run throughout the summer. Less
tangible at present is the 'Blessing', King Charles I's baggage ferry, which
belonged to a local shipowner and which sank off Burntisland in 1633. The
search for this potentially priceless ship is another of the Heritage Trust's projects.
